540 King Street is a new 7,600 sf multi-use building located on the block between Spring Street and Woolfe Street. The project presented with unique challenges due to the location and size of the lot. Our design needed to blend in to the urban fabric of the historic district, while reflecting a more modern aesthetic. We were able to make the building feel cohesive with surrounding buildings by using native materials such as limestone, brick, and stucco and traditional classic proportions. However, the modern, clean lines and high contrast color scheme differentiate it from historic structures. In order to maximize the space of the narrow lot, the building abuts a neighboring building, so light wells were incorporated on each side of the building to bring light deep into the space. The building includes first floor commercial space, second floor office spaces, and a third floor residential loft with an outdoor patio overlooking King Street. Interior finishes reflect an updated classic aesthetic, with light coastal colors, wide planked oak floors, warm mixed metals, and black windows.
